Parents and Children
Are you concerned about your child who has difficulty in school, focusing and participating in groups, and getting along with others? Do you find yourself asking your child several times to “do something” or to “stop doing something” and they just don’t listen? Has your child been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD? Behavioral Therapy may be a good place to start in order learn how to create rules and consistent discipline and structure in the home. Learning and practicing how to reinforce positive behaviors and discourage negative behaviors leads to more positive communication with your child.
Parents and Adolescents
Parents with teenagers with major behavioral difficulties may be in a great deal of pain, as there is often chaos in the home, tempers may rage, emotions become dysregulated and hurtful/angry words and threats may escalate. Does your teen sometimes make threats of self-harm? Is substance use a factor with your teen? Individual therapy along with family therapy may provide some relief. In some cases exploring options for respite for the family and/or arrangements for residential treatment and/or hospitalization may be in order. Working with a psychiatrist for a medication referral and assessment may also be indicated. These cases may require on-going therapies for several weeks/months, in an effort to reintegrate the family together incrementally and over time. I have many years of experience in assisting teens and families with these processes, contact me for a free 15-minute consultation.
